Flooring, our favorite product

We generally stock antique flooring to include Long Leaf Pine, Heart Pine, Northern Pines, Hemlock, Maple and Oak.

Our salvaged stock ranges from 2 3/8ths in width to and occasional 11" width.

We mill flooring from antique beams, generally Long Leaf, Heart Pine or Loblolly, but sometimes Oak and can provide that in widths up to 7" as a custom order.  (Lead time required)

Heart Pine flooring shown above.  Along with great stained glass, antique beaded wood wainscot, a beautiful doorknob, and antique clawfoot tub, we carry it all.   Adding columns and Heart Pine trim will add incredible beauty to any home.  The 9' tall pocket doors help to separate areas yet open them up when company comes.  The last picture above shows wider Heart Pine mixed with narrower, but also shows how much lighter in color the fresh milled flooring in the front is compared to the salvaged flooring that has been more exposed to the air.  It is darker and the fresh milled will likewise darken too if you give it a little time.

Salvaged flooring prices start at $5.50 a sqft. Fresh milled starting at $7.00 a sqft. Prices depend on grade, length, width and sqft needed for flooring order. For a more detailed quote please call.

Of the 10 Southern Pine species, long leaf pine is most commonly referred to in the trade as heart pine. It is generally characterized by tighter growth rings, higher density and greater proportion of heartwood. Long leaf lumber is so prized it merits a special quality classification within the grading rules. However, SPIB adds another wrinkle to the heart pine puzzle. The rule states, Long leaf lumber shall be produced only from Southern Pine tree species (botanical) of Pinuselliottii [slash pine] and P. Palustris [long leaf pine]  Because the two species share many characteristics (long needles, higher density), both slash and long leaf timber can be manufactured as long leaf lumber if minimum requirements like ring density are met under the rules.

Because it has a slower rate of growth, long leaf pine was not replanted as widely as other faster growing species. Consequently, long leaf pine may be in short supply while efforts are underway to increase its availability (visit the Long leaf Alliance site to find out more).

Lumber cut exclusively from today's long leaf timber is also referred to as new heart pine. Antique heart pine or reclaimed heart pine refers to lumber from old growth Southern Pine, regardless of species, salvaged as timbers from old factories, mills or barns, or recovered as sinker logs from river bottoms. Other variations on the theme include old heart and river pine.
